SHERMAN BLACKSMITH SHOP

last updated: June 05, 2018

The Sherman Blacksmith and Woodwright Shop is located in the 120 year old Sherman Blacksmith Shop in Sutton, Massachusetts and is owned by the Sutton Historical Society. The shop is staffed by three volunteers, Fran Donnelly, Greg Wolodkin and Steve Colonies.

Duties include maintaining a historic site, educational tours of the shop for local youth groups, all while using their large collection of antique hand tools to fashion wrought iron and wooden reproductions.

These items include reproductions of an antique sled found in the shop, period benches and chandeliers and an 18th century blanket chest. The iron parts are blackened on the hearth and treated with a special oil/beeswax blend and the wood surfaces are done with Old Fashioned Milk Paint on the exteriors and orange shellac on the interiors to provide a true antique appearance. Authentic items from the forge are fireplace cranes and tools, hooks and various wall sconces.
